The Golden Era of the Plantation Industry on the East Coast of Sumatra and Their Legacies

The spectacular development of the plantation industry on the East Coast of Sumatra toward the end of 19th Century became a legend, so much so that it drew the attention of many investors from Europe, USA, and even from Japan. The Netherlands was one of the important player and many footprints from the golden era still can be found in many parts of the Netherlands.

As a consequence, Medan, originally a small town, became the largest city in Sumatra and was even considered as one of the most modern cities in Asia.

One may wonder what is happening to the famous Deli Tobacco and the other commodities pioneered on the East Coast of Sumatra?

Soedjai Kartasasmita, the prominent figure of the plantation industry in Indonesia, will explain this question in his presentation.

He is dedicated to the history of Indonesia’s plantation industry, especially those in North Sumatra, by establishing two Plantation Museums in Medan.

The first one you can find in the complex of the Indonesian Palm Oil Research Institute and the second one in the former AVROS (Algemene Vereniging van Rubberplanter ter Oostkust van Sumatra) Building. In the Dactiloscopy Room, there is a collection of archives of more than half a million labourers employed in almost all plantations on the East Coast Sumatra since the beginning of the 20th century.
